چکیده

When having tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) experiences, phonologically related words have both facilitated and impeded word retrieval. This experiment examined whether phonologically related words’ syntactic class (part of speech) is responsible for these differential effects. Sixty college students saw general knowledge questions whose answers were designated target words and responded “know”, “don’t know”, or “TOT”. Following “TOT” and “don’t know” responses, participants saw five words, one of which was a prime. Primes contained the target’s first syllable and either shared or did not share the target’s part of speech. Following presentation of the primes, retrieval of the target was attempted again. Different part-of-speech primes facilitated resolution of TOTs, whereas same part-of-speech primes had no effect, relative to phonologically unrelated words. These results support Node Structure Theory’s most-primed-wins principle and the Transmission Deficit model account of TOTs and detail the importance of syntactic class in selecting words that are candidates for speech production.

Neighborhood Density, the Tip-of-the-Tongue Phenomenon, and Aging

A tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) elicitation task was used with younger adults in Experiment 1 and with older adults in Experiment 2 to examine the influence of word frequency, neighborhood density, and neighborhood frequency on the retrieval of phonological word forms from the lexicon. The results of Experiment 1 replicated the results of Harley and Bown (1998): More TOT states were elicited for word...

Inequality between the classes: Phonological and distributional typicality as predictors of lexical processing

Information about the syntactic category of a word can be derived from a number of complementary sources. We focus here on phonological and distributional cues for distinguishing nouns and verbs that have been proposed as useful for language acquisition. In this paper we assessed the extent to which this information affects lexical processing in adults. We hypothesised that the phonological or ...

Phonological typicality and sentence processing.

In studies of language, it is widely accepted that the form of a word is independent of its meaning and syntactic category. Thus, the relationship between phonological form and grammatical class would not be expected to affect reading time. However, Farmer et al. have now shown that the phonological typicality of a noun or verb influences how rapidly it is read. This finding has implications fo...

Remnant Movement, Last Resort and Greed: A Minimalist Account of Bulgarian Clitics

The class of clitic elements cannot be defined based on immediately obvious syntactic properties. Clitics belong to different syntactic categories: pronouns, auxiliaries, and sentential particles with a range of functions. In contrast, all clitics fall into the phonological category of non-stressed elements. That is why their ordering has been traditionally viewed as a phonological phenomenon. ...

Why Children Omit Function Morphemes : Metric vs . Syntactic Structure

It is an interesting and noticeable fact that in the early stages of language production, children omit certain elements from their speech. Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that children regularly omit certain function morphemes, as opposed to content words. Function morphemes (including determiners, pronouns, auxiliary verbs, and inflection morphemes) form a natural class from both a p...
